News and updates March 2019

Hello there! Sorry it’s been a while.

While I haven’t managed to get our regular emails out, there’s been no shortage of activity behind the scenes here at Poppet Head Records.

Most of our artists have been busy making hay while the sun shines and playing gigs all over the state. I’ve changed more nappies than I’ve played live shows but that’s par for course.

You may have seen we recently had some website issues, don’t worry it wasn’t Russian spies trying to steal our music, just an unfortunate combination of forced updates and not yet ready plugins. Caused quite a bit of a headache really and meant I had to spend quite a bit of time rebuilding the site instead of doing something productive… like sleeping.

The good news though is we now have a leaner, faster website with some cool new pages and funky features.

New website features

  • Events: Our events page now syncs with Facebook (YAY) so if there’s a Facebook event for one of our artists’ gigs it’s practically guaranteed to show up here.
  • Bookings: You can now use our online form to book our artists for gigs, tours, house concerts or even lunch dates with your Mum. Hi Mum!
  • House Concerts: Have you ever considered hosting a house concert at your place? Not sure how they work, how many peeps to invite or how much to charge? Don’t stress, we’ve answered these hardball questions on our new house concerts page.
  • Artist Subscriptions: Yeah they broke… and broke hard… BUT FEAR NOT they’re back!!! And they’re now 100% powered by Patreon who know a thing or two about this sort of thing. You can still find artist subscriptions in our store but the links will take you over to our new Patreon page where you can support any of our artists and even the label itself. Thanks!
  • New in store: You can now purchase Rowboy’s Higher and Frank Bell’s White Horse in the store. Touchdown!

News and updates November 2018

I’m almost reluctant to say the words… but… can you believe it’s almost Christmas?

On account of being a few weeks behind in getting this months newsletter out, Christmas is seriously just around the corner, in fact, I’m attending a family Christmas party this weekend and backing it up with an event the following day that I hope you can make it along to.

I had been thinking of holding a Christmas showcase for our artists but the spirited folk at the Golden Vine Hotel have (in a round about fashion) beaten me to it with their Muso Party this Sunday at which you’ll be able to catch practically all of our artists!

Golden Vine Muso Party

With music from 2Pm to 9PM, the Golden Vine Muso Party is a huge event with a killer lineup (see below) and all funds raised from donations at entry will go to beyond blue – A fantastic organisation for those who require support with all facets of mental health.

News and updates September 2018

It’s taken me a long time to write this and I’m sorry that it’s taken this long. In fact, it was late June when I last posted.

The fact is, I just haven’t been able to work out where to start or how to say it. So here goes…

Vale Liam Thorpe

Liam Thorpe - A beautiful soul who will be sorely missed by us all. Picture by: Jim Marshall
Liam Thorpe. Picture by: Jim Marshall

As you may know, we sadly farewelled Liam Thorpe who died following a tragic accident in July.

The months since have been tough to say the least and we are all still so terribly saddened by his passing.

We will remember Liam for his poetic songwriting, his witty humour and his unashamedly loving nature.

Liam brought a genuineness to all his songs including his observational works. He could transport you to another place and time and have you believe that he was singing about a personal experience.

He was a beautiful soul who will be sorely missed by us all.

The Healers of Hurt will go on

The Healers of Hurt.

With the support of Liam’s partner, Lea, and the founding members of the group, Steph and I will continue to perform as The Healers of Hurt.

We are yet to seek additional members but we are committed to continuing what Liam, Skip, Steve and I started back in 2016 – discussing topics close to our hearts and exploring the very fabric of life, love and community through our songs.

Welcome Steph Bitter

Steph Bitter.

I’m very exited to announce that Steph Bitter has officially joined the Poppet Head Records family.

Steph’s beautiful soothing voice and intricate guitarwork showcase her natural ability to create inspiring and moving works based on her experiences. She exibits an air of authenticity and integrity in each performance, leaving her audiences nothing short of inspired.

Along-side recording her beautiful songs, Steph will help guide the future of this crazy little label of ours.

You can now find Steph’s debut EP, First of May on the Poppet Head Records store and more info about Steph on her artist page.

We’ll do our best to keep up with Steph’s busy schedule and list as many of her gigs on our events page as we can.

The War of Ideas take a break

The War of Ideas.

With Frida on maternity leave and Steve overcommitted to competing interests, The War of Ideas have decided to take a break.

If the stars align, they may return in 2019.

Of course the songs will live on and if you happen to catch one of Trevor Petrie’s solo shows you are bound to hear a few War of Ideas tunes.

Inner City Traders rock like it’s 1993

Inner City Traders.

Get ready for some new old-skool grunge!

This is what happens when you take Frida, the grounding element of The War of Ideas and leave nostalgic boys in a studio with a six pack of beer and a half a dozen GT cans.

The Inner City Traders are: Trevor Petrie: (vocals, guitar). Brian Hosking: (drums). Ben Blanks: (lead guitar). We are currently auditioning for a bass player and hope to be able to make an announcement soon.

We’re still writing songs for our debut release but you can check out the demos as we write them by following our SoundCloud Playlist.

Upcoming events

We’re looking for artists

We’re always looking for like-minded artists and bands who are interested in building a culture of collaboration and knowledge sharing and are keen to help not only themselves but also help other artists get their music out to a wider audience.

If you’re interested in becoming a member of Poppet Head Records, or you know someone who might be, take a look at our Label Artist Membership page, we’d love to hear from you.

Thanks for being part of our journey, we truly appreciate your support,

– Trevor –

Live performance of “Practical Joke” by Trevor Petrie

A few weeks ago my little family of three became a family of four when we welcomed the arrival of our son Taeo.

Once again our world has temporarily been turned up-side down. Sleepless nights, lots of visitors, more loads of washing than you could even imagine but all rewarded with watching this new young life develop before our eyes.

In light of the current state of our “normal”, I thought I’d play a song I wrote a few years back about my feelings towards this crazy world we live in.

[embedyt] www.youtube.com/watch?v=uAC0Nq3jfEk%5B/embedyt%5D

Lyrics:

Waking to a world
So infinitely messed up it must be part of some evil genius’ experiment
Trying to understand
We need to get along but we can’t exist without conflict

Given the power of intellect, and a handful of clues
A desire for knowledge and second hand shoes

Pretty girls and messed up rules
Make believe and social stigma too
Treading water with beaten up limbs; broken arms and battered heads
Trying to stay afloat in an ocean of sins; a life time of regrets
A mental picture of distress

Social abandonment of simplicity
Paperwork and red tape tower toward the sky, tower towards the sky
Does regret equate to blunder?
Given a second change is there something new that you would try?

Given the power of insight, a handful of clues
A desire to dominate and enforce our own views

Pretty girls and mesed up rules
Make believe and social stigma too
Treading water with beaten up limbs; broken arms and battered heads
Trying to stay afloat in an ocean of sins; a life time of regrets
A mental picture of distress

No way home
No way home
Do you call this home?
There’s no way home

Pretty girls and messed up rules
Make believe and social stigma too
Life’s a practical joke; someone’s idea of a sense of humour
Where do we belong?

Live performance of “So Deluding” by Trevor Petrie

I wrote “So Deluding” almost 15 years ago. I was a very different person then and it’s kinda weird going back into that part of my mind. It’s a place I don’t often go, and for good reason. I was at war with myself, I knew my words and actions were working against me on a daily basis. I was wrestling a foe I couldn’t see and it was wearing me down.

Although the lyrics hint at finding a peace of sorts, when I discovered I’d been living in the past and wanting to change events that had already occurred, it still took me almost a decade to learn how to deal with my thoughts and emotions.

[embedyt] www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdrPlQR4hv4%5B/embedyt%5D

Lyrics:

Take me away from all that I’m feeling.
Take me away from where I’ve found myself just like before.
Pick me up, drag me out, make me believe that there’s more than all I can see
Through this version of me
So deluding

It’s not like I’ve let it become me.
It’s not like I let it all slip out from under my feet.
But it’s always inside, like the moon and the tide, like the reaper standing over my shoulder.
It’s Hard.

But now I see
I finally believe
That I have been living for yesterday

My emotions like a de-railing rollercoaster.
They toy with my overwhelmed and ill-fated temper.
Point it out, say it aloud but don’t make excuses for my bad behaviour of late
And my dealings with fate
So deluding

But now I see
I finally believe
That I have been living for yesterday, yesterday

Take me away from all that I’m feeling
Take me away from where I found myself again just like before…

Now I see
I finally, I truly believe
That I have been living for yesterday

Live performance of “Devil on my Shoulder” by Trevor Petrie

This is a new song that I wrote over the weekend. I’d just had a discussion with my wife about how I hadn’t managed to get into the studio all week and how I was feeling a bit bummed by the fact, when a flood of words and ideas came to me.

Being the incredible woman that she is, Frida then sat through a good couple of hours of me fleshing out this idea, which until tonight was called “Idea 8”. Thanks to the wonders of television err internet? it is now known as “Devil on my shoulder”.

It appears to be an introspective piece. I’ve definitely been spending way too much time with my own thoughts lately. I’ve given my reflection and my head-space a personality in previous songs, this time I’ve gone so far as to put that personality into a black suit… Thankfully he appears to be on my side this time.

[embedyt] www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9NrrPBkRHA%5B/embedyt%5D

Lyrics:

There’s a man in a black suit following me
He’s reading my fortunes and he’s reading me my misery
He knows where I live and he knows where I sleep
At night he sits outside my door and he watches over me

Sometimes I can’t sleep at night
There’s a devil on my shoulder hangin’ on for dear life
Sometimes I can’t sleep at night
With each turn of the page, with each turn of the cheek
with each turn of the tide I loose another place to hide

I saw him watching from under the tress across the street
That’s when I noticed the lines and the look upon his face and I swear it startled me
He’s full of worry but he comes back, time and again
I’m starting to wonder, maybe he’s my only friend

Sometimes I can’t sleep at night
Is there a devil on my shoulder or is that just the street light?
Sometimes I can’t sleep at night
With each roll of the dice, with each roll of the punches
with each roll of the deep blue night, I find another little piece of light

I don’t recall when it all began
Or when he started following me
I thought, he was only there, whenever I was down
I’ve come to realise he’s my strength in my time of need——d

Sometimes I can’t sleep at night
There’s a devil on my shoulder hangin’ on for dear life
Sometimes I can’t sleep at night
With each turn of the page, with each turn of the cheek
with each turn of the tide I loose another—r

Sometimes I can’t sleep at night
Is there a devil on my shoulder or is that just the street light?
Sometimes I can’t sleep at night
With each roll of the dice, with each roll of the punches
with each roll of the deep blue night—t

I find another little piece of light

Live performance of “Eternity” by Trevor Petrie

I wrote this song tonight after various discussions earlier today got my head loaded with thoughts and ideas.

We are all connected. We see a physical plane, yet we walk on energy and light.

Trust in and be true to yourself and you can achieve anything.

[embedyt] www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCJpdOVyYuE%5B/embedyt%5D

Lyrics

There’s a man who once prayed for me
He gave rise to my prosperity
Shifting sands thought they could drag me down
Played for foolish, they now see my crown

The secret keeps me strong
I’m right where I belong
The secret keeps me safe

I don’t leave it up to chance
Because one chance is all you get
I don’t search for the key
Because the key is to believe it’s real

Daily habits keep my vision true
No need to ask, it belongs to you
See the numbers, keeping me on course
Drawing down from vital source

The secret keeps me strong
I’m right where I belong
The secret keeps me safe

I don’t leave it up to chance
Because one chance is all you get
I don’t search for the key
Because the key is to believe it’s real

It’s better when spoken
I’m taking control of this whole big mess
And when I’m broken
You know where you can find me

Live performance of “Flightless child” by Trevor Petrie

This song was written for someone close to me. When I found out that she was suffering from anxiety and depression it broke my heart. I didn’t want that for her, not her too. I won’t go into too much more detail, suffice to say it is very special to me and if the lyrics speak to you I’m sure you will give the song your own special meaning too.

[embedyt] www.youtube.com/watch?v=D-BUJcmD-SM%5B/embedyt%5D

Lryics:

Flightless child, caught between worlds
So shy, so guiltless, yet exhausted and so aged
Breathing in everyone else’s fumes
Drawing the poison into your once untainted heart
Spoilt and turned sour by sinister and cold influence

Passion and exuberance, laughter and smile
Where did they go when you put them all aside?
Dear child don’t get trapped here amongst the ruins
Don’t get drawn into the picture we paint
Pick and choose your colours and start anew
Pick and choose your own colours and paint a fresh view

Flightless child, caught between hands and arms
Held in our warm embrace
Flightless child won’t you tower now?

A finger drawing idle swirls of nothing in the air
Pointing to the stars although they can’t be seen from there
Stretched beyond breaking point but somehow you hold on
How do you survive?
What is it that you cling to that makes you so strong?
What is it that you cling to? Is it just this song?

Flightless child, caught between hands and arms
Held in our warm embrace
Flightless child won’t you tower now
Let those wings grow from within, take flight and flee
So guiltless, so innocent, now liberated and free

Flightless child, caught between hands and arms
Held in our warm embrace
Flightless child won’t you tower now
Let those wings grow from within, take flight and flee
So guiltless, so innocent, now liberated and free

Liberated and free

Live performance of “Intersection” by Trevor Petrie

There was a lot going on in my life when I wrote this song… band break-up, moving towns, renovating and a 3 month old baby girl.

There didn’t seem to be much time for writing, singing or playing and I came very close to giving music away.

When I wrote Intersection that all changed. It was one of those stare at yourself in the mirror kind of moments. This one song got me writing again and I haven’t looked back.

[embedyt] www.youtube.com/watch?v=lYMKT58JQfg%5B/embedyt%5D

Lyrics:

I’ve been catching glimpses of my reflection
Catching glimpses of me
And why do I get the feeling
He’s not happy with who he sees?
I know I’m learning familiar lessons
Time and time again
I’m getting older but I’m none the wiser
This blindness never ends
Oh this blindness never ends

I’ve been staking claims, I’ve got growing pains
And there’s an emptiness inside
I fear I missed my calling and now I’m falling
Why can’t I put these fears aside
When will I put these fears aside

I’m judging my reflection
I hate this intersection
I’m happy when I have more time
To deal with emotions I can’t hide
I need a break from overdrive
Just want a chance to feel alive
I guess it’s now or never
Can’t be like this forever

It just can’t be like this no more

Live performance of “Little Bird” by Trevor Petrie

Little Bird is an original song that I wrote back in 2010 when I was working in Melbourne during the week and returning home to Bendigo each weekend.

The song is based on the fleeting visits my fiance (now wife) would make to my apartment. They were never long enough and I always missed her terribly.

[embedyt] www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WFMKw5-xB0%5B/embedyt%5D

Lyrics:

Come to me, sing to me, play with me, stay with me.
I’d like to be your friend.
Walk with me, talk to me, fly up so high with me.
I’d like to be your friend.

But don’t think about tomorrow.
Just let it slip from your mind.
And don’t think about tomorrow.
So we can enjoy our time.
Little bird.

Build your nest near me so I can see you clearly.
Your eyes bring a smile to my face.
Build your nest carefully, with love so tenderly.
I like having you by my side.

But don’t think about tomorrow.
Just let it slip from your mind.
And don’t think about tomorrow.
So we can enjoy our time.
Little bird.

Come to me, sing to me, play with me, stay with me.
Walk with me, talk to me, fly up so high with me.

But don’t think about tomorrow.
Just let it slip from your mind.
And don’t think about tomorrow.
So we can enjoy our time.
Little bird.

Live performance of “You An Me” by Trevor Petrie

As I mention in the video, this is the first song I finished on a guitar that is not yet mine but hopefully soon will be. The song is called you an me and it’s about finding that person who keeps you grounded, lets you into their world, shares your world and makes you life better. That said, there’s often challenges along the way and it’s how you meet those challenges that determines the strength of any relationship.

Thanks for watching.

Cheers,
Trevor

Lyrics:

Some days I just don’t feel quite right
But when you came in to my life
A calming breeze blew right through my soul
And there’s no doubting the fact that baby you make me whole

Oh my love, we nearly drowned
But we made it through the darkness and we came back out
We set our fears aside and put the pain to bed
And now I feel your soul touch mine every time you stroke my head

Hold me baby I love you like crazy
Hold me baby I love you like crazy
Hold me baby I love you like crazy
Hold me baby I love

I love you
I need you
I’ll be with you forever now

Skip, Trevor Petrie and Liam Thorpe continue their tour of regional Victoria as “The Healers of Hurt“.

For this leg of the journey they’re joined by one of regional Victoria’s favourite young folk singer/songwriters Steph Bitter, whose songs, much like her fellow troubadours, reflect her experiences and emotions towards the things around her.

The Healers of Hurt honour the folk tradition of a song-circle format, with each artist not only performing their favourite works but also sharing stories about the songs, their lives and experiences. Expect engaging performances, captivating lyrics and beautiful harmonies as these songwriters explore topics close to their hearts as well as the power of life, love and community through song.

Paper Souls & The War of Ideas – Bendigo

2017 was an epic year for Launceston’s Paper Souls. After the release of the Single “Nothing is Broken”, they were invited to Support both Killing Heidi and COG on their recent Tassie Tours. The 5 piece have been writing, recording and performing live, with a solid new line up, cracker new tunes; with an on stage energy that’s intense, emotive and raw. Alternative Rock with a grunge edge.

The Paper Souls team up with Bendigo’s The War of Ideas and Sherri Parry to bring you a great night of original live music.

The Beauty of Solitude EP Launch

The War of Ideas will launch their latest EP “The Beauty of Solitude” at the Golden Vine Hotel, Bendigo on Saturday Nov 4.

The Beauty of Solitude (2017)

“The Beauty of Solitude” features four tracks where the band explore in great detail topics such as: what it means to live in an ever-connected digital age, how to let go of your past and break free of limiting beliefs, love, loss and heartache.

The EP features special guests Liam Thorpe, who helped to create some gorgeous three-part harmonies in three of the tracks; and Erek Ladd who laid down a tasty lead break in “A Stranger to Wisdom”.

A limited number of signed copies of the EP will be available on the night.

The War of Ideas start work on new record

We’re very excited to announce that The War of Ideas have begun work on a new record. Principle song writer, Trevor Petrie claims the band has close to 10 demos written for what will likely become a 4 track EP. Petrie assured us that we will definitely see a release from the band some time this year.

Over the past 2 years, Petrie’s band has been an ever-changing lineup, so if you need a refresher The War of Ideas are: Trevor Petrie (vocals, guitar), Brian Hosking (drums), Steve Myers (bass), Frida Petrie (keys, backing vocals) and Ben Blanks (electric guitar).

If some of those names sound familiar, that’s likely because Brian Hosking, Steve Myers, and Trevor Petrie were all members of the alternative rock band Anti Social Commentary who played throughout Victoria between 2004 – 2013, releasing 3 self produced EP’s.

The 2017 EP will be first release by “The War of Ideas”, Petrie having released Lion in the Closet, a solo album of sorts, in 2013 under the name: Trevor Petrie and The War of Ideas. It will also be the band’s first release as a 5 piece.

Connect with The War of Ideas via their Facebook page or on Twitter.
